Can plants tell the difference between sunlight and artificial light?

The light from the sun is different from artificial light, where most artificial light doesn’t emit as much energy in the red and blue region of the light spectrum as sunlight does. But all light energy is emitted in the form of photons. Photons are what plants capture in the process of photosynthesis, which enables plants to combine carbon dioxide and water to create glucose and oxygen. Whilst researchers have demonstrated that plants can grow quite successfully using only artificial light, and in-door gardeners and aquaponics systems use them too, but in reality sunlight is best for most plants to grow well.

Are aquaponic fish healthy to eat?

Aquaponic fish grown in an aquaponic system is an efficient and organic way to grow healthy food. The food is organic because you’ve eliminated the need for soils and chemical fertilisers. Plus you can’t use chemical pesticides in an aquaponics system either, otherwise the fish will be harmed. Which means that by combining aquaponics fish with aquaponics plants, you not only reduce the amount of water used by up to 90%, but you also get two harvests from one system. Both of which are healthy and good to eat. Plus they can all be grown right in your own home or backyard.

Can you eat goldfish (Is it safe to eat a goldfish?)

Goldfish are as edible as any other freshwater fish. However, due to how small they are and because they are very bony, they don’t make for good eating. They probably taste of the water they live in and you are better off using other fish like tilapia in your aquaponics system for your fish harvest. But if your plan is to only harvest your aquaponics vegetables and not eat your fish, then goldfish make for good aquaponics fish in these circumstances.

Do you need a water filter in an aquaponics system?

On the basis that you use good quality fish food (as apposed to cheap low quality fish food). If you make sure you don’t have too many fish in your aquaponics system for its water capacity. Plus if you don’t over-feed your fish; Then no you don’t really need an aquaponics aquarium filter or biofilter. The fish waste will dissolve into the water and then the micro-bacteria will convert this into the nutrients (i.e. nitrates) needed by the aquaponics plants. Which means all the waste is automatically filtered out.

But having said that it’s not recommended to begin with Koi fish when you first start out due to their high price tag!

Compare bluegill vs tilapia in aquaponics (Best fish for aquaponics)

Bluegill vs tilapia in aquaponics when compared there’s very little between them. tilapia is a part of the cichlid family, while the bluegills are sunfish. They taste great in different ways. They are both hardy fish and easy to maintain, but it’s the tilapia fish that are still the best fish for aquaponics. Tilapia grow faster and are almost indestructible, making them ideal for beginners to aquaponics.
