Bluegill vs tilapia in aquaponics when compared there’s very little between them. Tilapia are a part of the cichlid family, while bluegills are sunfish. They taste great in different ways. They are both hardy fish and easy to maintain, but it’s the tilapia fish that are still the best fish for aquaponics. Tilapia grow faster and are almost indestructible, making them ideal for beginners to aquaponics.

The best fish for aquaponics

When you look at the above comparison table between tilapia vs bluegill fish, you’ll see that they are both great fish for aquaponics.

Both fish taste great, but in different ways. They are both extremely hardy fish and easy to maintain. However, if you want a fish that is slightly fast growing and almost indestructible, tilapia are still the best fish for aquaponics.

Having said that, due to the fact that bluefish are native to North America, these can be caught to put in your aquaponics system.

Tilapia fish

There are many advantages to tilapia, which includes their growth rate. But they have an excellent food conversion rate too or around 1.7. Whilst they breed very quickly, you have to be mindful of the males tilapia, which can get quite aggressive at this time.

Bluegill fish

The Bluegill fish have many of the same advantages to those of tilapia, which includes that they require little maintenance in aquaponics systems. Bluegill fish are a part of the sunfish family of fish, although sunfish live in saltwater, whereas bluegills live in freshwater.
